How do you align the cam with the crank?

Hi, I blew a head gasket and decided to change it myself. I thought I was a real mechanic untill I had to put back the cam. I didnt realize that the cam and crank were in sync. How do you know where to align the cam and crank? Please help an amature mechanic.
